Reading's Colossal Lion by Robert Clarke
The origins of the famous Maiwand Lion statue and its life-story are interwoven with the history of Reading’s development and growth, involving its commercial and civic leaders and causes ranging from civic pride and imperialism to urban planning and multiculturalism, through Victoria’s reign to the present day.
Author Robert Clarke trained as a civil engineer. Working in local authorities, he served as Director of Highways and Planning for Berkshire County Council, then later as a director in an international consultancy. He was appointed OBE in 2003 for services to local government. In retirement Robert studied History at Oxford: this book is drawn from his postgraduate research into the Victorian Empire.
